From paleo to keto, to elimination diets to adaptogens – the ideal ways to achieve “health” are constantly evolving in the wellness space. I love learning about all of these trends, although I have to admit, as a consumer it can become overwhelming to know where to begin.
If there is one thing I have learned in my wellness journey, it’s that health is not one-size-fits-all. There is no single definition of what it means to be “healthy.” Health is more than the foods we eat; it is how we nourish our bodies and minds. Each body is different, and it can take trial and error to determine what works best for us.
This being said, one ritual I know makes my body feel its best is starting my day with a smoothie. My daily smoothie keeps my digestion in check, and is an opportunity to sneak in fruit AND vegetables. Cauliflower is one of my favorite veggies to include. Steaming cauliflower in advance makes it easier to digest, and freezing it makes your smoothie VERY thick and creamy.
I frequently receive questions asking, “Can you taste the cauliflower?” and “Does it overpower the smoothie?” Amazingly, you can’t taste it! I have served cauliflower smoothies to people who claim they don’t like cauliflower, and they love it.
An important part of my smoothie routine is having the ingredients prepped and ready to go. To prepare the cauliflower, I cut a head of cauliflower into florets and steam for about 10 minutes. Once cooled, I lay the florets flat on a sheet of wax paper on my freezer shelf. Once frozen, I remove the cauliflower from the wax paper and store in my freezer.
I like adding a scoop of collagen peptides to my smoothies, although this is optional. After taking collagen peptides for just one month, I noticed a significant improvement in my digestion and in the health and thickness of my hair and nails.
I love to mix up my smoothies each morning to obtain a variety of nutrients, but one of my tried-and-true favorite recipes is this Dairy Free Cauliflower Smoothie. It tastes rich and indulgent, while packing a nutrient-dense punch to start your day.
Dairy Free Cauliflower Smoothie
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (I make my own from raw almonds)
- ½ cup steamed then frozen cauliflower
- ½ frozen ripe banana
- 1 Tb creamy organic peanut butter
- 1 scoop collagen peptides (optional)
- Sprinkle of cinnamon
- Add all ingredients to a high speed blender.
- Blend till smooth.
- Top as desired. I topped with extra banana slices, granola and a drizzle of peanut butter.
