What is soy? Soy, defined by Wikipedia, is a species of legume native to East Asia, widely grown for its edible bean which has many uses.
Let’s break it down now, soy is such a controversial topic and often gets a (really) bad wrap, unfortunately all soy products are tarred with the same brush and all get put in the ‘bad for you’ basket. And it’s true, there are some downfalls to soy (we’ll get to that later), however, it’s important to know all the facts and take in as much knowledge as possible on topics so we can make informed decisions. And there is one benefit of soy in particular that cannot be denied. When it comes to protein – there’s no denying it, soy is a complete source of protein which, to break it down, means that it contains all of the essential amino acids we need. So, for anyone who doesn’t eat meat, it is said that soy has the same amount of protein of that found in animal products. This is so beneficial to vegetarians and vegans looking to include protein in their diets and there are so many soy products in which they can do so; pasta, milk, cheese, tofu and the list goes on.
However, not all soy is created equal and the truth is there are issues with some soy. A lot of soy products on the market are highly processed, non-organic and GMO sources which is the root of the problem when it comes to ‘bad’ soy. These are definitely types of soy to steer clear from and are the cause of concern when it comes to links to health issues. So, it is important to note that when choosing soy, ensure that it is an organic, non-GMO source.
When we think of soy, we think of protein. And generally, when we think of pasta, we think of heavy carbohydrates. So, how good is it that you can have your pasta and eat it too…if you’re looking to reduce carbs in your diet or just looking for a healthier alternative that offers a higher protein and fiber content, give soybean pasta a go. However, as we mentioned earlier, it’s important to choose your brand wisely. Which is why we love Kana Organics – their natural soy bean pasta is made from 100% organic soybean, non-GMO and contains no nasties. They are certified USDA Organic and have a high control process over their manufacturing. Hooray!! You can purchase Kana Organics Soy Bean Pasta from our shop, here.
Apart from the protein content, some other benefits of organic, non-GMO soy include:
– Soy protein is said to be beneficial for heart health and could reduce cholesterol
– Some of the compounds found in soy are said to reduce the risk of certain cancers
– High source of fiber
– Filled with Omega-3 fatty acids
– Contains a range of nutrients – high in vitamins and minerals, therefore increasing the overall nutritional value
So there you have it, a little lesson in soy today. The jury may still be out on the benefits of soy as a whole, however, there is one thing we do know – stay clear of the processed stuff and stick to brands like Kana that use 100% organic non-GMO soybeans! Just have a little think before you reach for soy and ensure that you are only consuming high grade, organic, non-GMO source. And of course, as always, do the research and speak to your health professional for individual advice.
